Case Study: Agricultural Storm Damage Claim – Underinsurance Challenge
Client: Farm Owner
Issue: Storm Damage to Multiple Farm Buildings
Financial Outcome: €5,800 Better Off After Fees
Before: Storm Damage and a Serious Underinsurance Risk
We received a referral from an insurance broker concerning storm damage to several agricultural buildings.
As with all commercial and agricultural claims, our first step was to obtain and review:
- The full policy schedule
- The terms and conditions
- The sums insured applicable to each structure
Following a joint on-site inspection with the insurer’s appointed loss adjuster, a significant issue quickly emerged: underinsurance.
The insurer’s senior loss adjuster assessed that the correct rebuilding value (sum insured) for the damaged buildings should have been €240,000.
However, our client’s policy only insured the buildings for €60,000.
Under the average clause applied in most property policies, this meant the settlement would be proportionally reduced.
The initial calculation proposed was:
€60,000 ÷ €240,000 × €15,000 (assessed loss) = €3,750 settlement
For the farm owner, this would have resulted in a severely reduced payout, leaving a substantial shortfall to fund personally.
During: Challenging the Sums Insured & Reframing the Calculation
Rather than accepting the insurer’s rebuilding valuation at face value, we conducted a detailed reassessment.
Our Agricultural Loss Assessor service focused on:
- Reviewing the construction type and actual reinstatement requirements
- Examining whether all buildings were correctly categorised
- Analysing whether the insurer’s €240,000 valuation was proportionate and technically justified
- Ensuring the correct buildings and damage scope were applied to the calculation
Through structured engagement and negotiation, we were able to:
- Reduce the insurer’s asserted rebuilding valuation from €240,000 to €100,000
- Increase the agreed loss value from €15,000 to €18,000
This materially changed how the average clause applied.
The revised calculation became:
€60,000 ÷ €100,000 × €18,000 = €10,800 settlement
By correcting the valuation basis and increasing the agreed loss, we significantly improved the financial outcome.
After: A Stronger Settlement and a Clear Financial Benefit
The final settlement agreed was €10,800.
After our professional fee of €1,250, the client remained approximately €5,800 better off than under the insurer’s original proposal.
In addition to the improved settlement, the client benefited from:
- Expert handling of a technically complex underinsurance issue
- Professional representation during negotiations
- No administrative burden in managing the claim
- Confidence that the average clause was fairly applied
Underinsurance can dramatically reduce claim payments if not carefully reviewed and challenged where appropriate.
The Pro Insurance Claims Difference
Agricultural claims frequently involve:
- Multiple outbuildings
- Varying construction types
- Complex reinstatement valuations
- Strict application of average clauses
Without specialist representation, policyholders may accept settlement calculations based on inflated rebuilding values or narrow interpretations of damage.
This case demonstrates how careful policy analysis, valuation challenge, and structured negotiation can materially improve the outcome — even where underinsurance applies.
When storm damage strikes, the way the claim is calculated can be just as important as the damage itself.
